Your rain jacket choices fall in a few broad categories:

Waterproof/breathable jacketsemphasize rain and wind protection. Low-cost styles feature a coated fabric, which breathes adequately for light to moderate activity. High-end models use laminated fabrics, such as Gore-Tex or eVent, which offer better breathability for strenuous activity.
Soft-shell jackets specialize in breathability and comfort for running or strenuous hiking. Most resist wind and light precipitation but cannot repel a drenching rain.
Waterproof-only jackets are low-cost and are best for low-exertion pursuits such as fishing or bird watching.
