The Self Defense Training System Combatives Program is based on the
teachings and the actual real life experience of well-known combat
instructors such as William Everett Fairbairn, Eric Anthony Sykes,
Dermot O'Neill, Wesley Brown, Col. Rex Applegate, John Styres, Charlie
Nelson and Carl Cestari. These are men who served in various military
capacities, usually with elite units that saw actual warfare then
devised, developed, researched studied and taught systems of close
combat that were actually used and saved lives in real life combat, real
life situations both in the military and law enforcement capacities. The need for realistic and effective hand to hand tactics reached its
zenith in World War II. On the cusp of global conflict, every super
power scrambled to gain any tactical edge over their enemy in every
aspect of warfare, especially close combat. The German war machine and
the legendary fighting prowess of the Japanese soldier had allied
forces concerned over the ability of our men to survive and win on the
battlefield and in clandestine operations deep behind enemy lines. This
sparked the “arms race” of hand to hand combat. Before tactical air
strikes, before night vision and before predator drones, soldiers were
frequently staring down the enemy’s bayonet. This was hand to hand,
knife to belly, pistol to skull tactics at its bloodiest.
